ACTION

A look at the headlines from Wednesday’s practice:

Priority:

• Chase Young continues to dominate during the 7-on-7 and team periods.

• The offensive line struggles to block the defense during the team periods.

•The injury list grows with Demario Davis, Bub Means, Cedrick Wilson and Equanimeous St.Brown missing practice.

Analysis:

• The offensive line was struggling to find a rhythm leading to poor protection during practice.

• Erik McCoy had a veteran rest day which led to multiple players getting an opportunity with the starters.

•Jordan Mims and Anfernee Orji both continue to shine during the team period.

What the coaches are saying

Post Practice Headlines

Dennis Allen's key points:

• While not an immediate need the tight end position does not have a proven playmaker. Foster Moreau has elevated to the top spot with Juwan Johnson out with a foot injury. ”Not having Juwan makes it look a little bit different,” Allen said. “I think Foster has done a good job with the things we’ve asked him to do. Holker is a guy who has caught my eye a little bit. Doing some things in the passing game. I think it’s an area we still have to improve on.”

• As reported by NewOrleans.Foobtall, Young is progressing well in his rehab as he looks to ramp up for full activity. “He’s certainly ahead of where we thought he was going to be at this time,” Allen said. “Every day you’re going to see a little bit more. It may be a couple more reps each period until finally, we’re ready to fully incorporate him.”

Today we did something different and followed Chase Young throughout practice to see what he does.

A look at Chase Young’s practice schedule and performance

Still on a “pitch count.” So far, Young has made the most of every opportunity on the field. Here’s a breakdown of his practice schedule and performance.

• After taping up in the training tent, Young hit the field immediately and worked on the side with fellow defensive linemen before the walkthrough period began.

• About four snaps into the drill he lined up on the left side and got four reps against Taliese Fuaga. Later in the walkthrough period, he participated in six total plays, four on the left side and two on the right.

• After stretches, he participated in the up-down sprint drill detailed here.

• Later he did position drills before heading into the 1-on-1 period where he matched up against Fuaga twice and Oli Udoh. He was never overmatched.

• During the first team period, he shined in the snaps he participated in. On his first snap of the team period he engaged Fuaga while keeping his eyes on the ball, then raised his hand for a pass deflection when Carr went to throw. On the second, third, fourth and fifth snaps, he continued to keep his eyes on the ball using various techniques to try to disrupt the play

• In-between periods he was off to the side working with Cam Jordan and Carl Granderson on a stab drill before the next team period.

• During the second team period, he engaged and beat Fuaga leading to Fuaga hitting the ground. On the second snap, he absorbed a majority of the protection. On the third snap, the play was run to the other side of the field. On his final play of this team period, he spun off a block and met the running back.

• He was in during the field-goal block period simulating a rush. Afterward, he worked on the side with Jordan on hand placement moves before the third team period.

• During the third team period, he was blocked while the play was run to the opposite side, his lightest team period of the day.

• In the final team period, he beat Fuaga, while keeping his eyes up and running towards the ball. His second play was lost due to a false start penalty against Dallin Holker. His third play was lost due to him jumping offside and having to do push-ups as punishment. On his final play of the day, he bull-rushed Fuaga beating him on the inside.

• He finished practice running with the other veteran players.

Chase Young’s key points

• Young’s workload increases each practice putting him closer to being clear for full participation. He is excited to get cleared for full contact but does not want to go backward in his recovery. “I’m going to take it slow,” Young said. “Want to make sure I keep the body right. Don’t want to outdo myself. It’s easy for your mind to tell you you're good but you don’t want to outdo your body.”

• Traded from the Washington Commanders to the San Fransisco 49ers late last season, Young went from a then rudderless franchise to a historically successful organization. Young says there are parallels between the 49ers and Saints. “The Saints and the 49ers are similar,” Young said. “Seeing the GM every day, how we lift, and the team camaraderie.”

Saints news as it breaks.

The whole point of following a team is knowing what's happening. Set it up once and stop missing things.
