ACTION
A look at the headlines from Wednesday’s practice:
Priority:
• The injury list continues to grow with Mason Tipton (hamstring) and Willie Gay Jr. (unspecified) leaving practice early.
• Cedrick Wilson Jr.’s stock rose, being Derek Carr’s go-to target in all three team periods. More from him later.
• Jake Haener returned to practice after receiving skin cancer treatment on Monday. Demario Davis and Jaylan Ford were seen on the field in jerseys and shorts later in practice.
Analysis:
• Derek Carr continued to look good during the team periods going 8-of-9. He did not complete a pass to Chris Olave.
• The defense continued to show their depth. Specifically at linebacker, with Davis, Pete Werner and now Gay Jr. out. D’Marco Jackson and Anfernee Orji continue to make plays during the team periods.
• A.T. Perry had his best day of camp. He was one of Haener’s favorite targets. Catching a touchdown in the third team period.
What the coaches are saying
Post Practice Headlines
Dennis Allen's key points:
• As first reported by NewOrleans.Football, the Saints have brought in free-agent safety Justin Simmons for a visit. As detailed in our story from last night, Simmons shares some familiarity with the Saints staff. “This is a guy that’s been a good player in our league for a long time,” Allen said. “I think it’s exactly what it is: it’s a visit. He’s coming in and we would talk about how we would see him. What type of vision we would have for him. And then if what we’re looking for and what he’s looking for, if those things match up, then we’ll see if it goes further than that.”
• Since releasing Marcus Maye in February there has not been an immediate answer for who will play safety opposite of Tyrann Mathieu. Jordan Howden and Johnathan Abram have both gotten first-team reps but no one has done enough consistently to be written in pen as a starter. Making the possible addition of Simmons an upgrade at safety. “I don’t think we’re set at that position opposite of Tyrann,” Allen said. “We got several guys that are competing. All of them have things that they do well. All of them have things that they have to improve on. I think we’re just going to let that play out as the preseason plays out. I’m not in any hurry to make a determination of where we’re at there.”
What the players are saying
Cedrick Wilson Jr.’s key points:
• Wilson Jr. comes to the Saints with the advantage of being familiar with the Kubiak/Shanahan scheme having played under Mike McDaniel in Miami. Wilson has shown he can be a contributor on offense throughout training camp. “I think I’m fitting pretty well,” Wilson said. “Kind of ran the same scheme the last two years. I’m definitely more comfortable than I would have been going somewhere else and trying to fit in. Getting more knowledge of the offense now that I know what’s going on, now I can look at the better details of it. Also, help the other guys when I do know the answer.”
• With injuries piling up at the receiver position there is an open opportunity for a player to establish themselves as the third option at wide receiver. Wilson is putting himself at the top of that list by gaining the trust of Derek Carr and showcasing his blocking ability. “I just want to put my best foot forward,” Wilson Jr. said. “Whatever is asked of me to do that’s what I’m going to do. Whether it is to block, Whether it is to catch the ball, Whether it is special teams. Those are my personal goals.”
Will Harris’ key points:
• Earlier this offseason Allen mentioned players in the secondary having to play multiple positions. Harris is an example of one of those players. “I think during this time it’s important for everybody to get reps at different spots, for the coaches to see guy’s skillsets,” Harris said. “We’re coming to work every day. We’re just putting the days together, stacking them together and figuring it out from there. I’m just doing my part and fit in where I can.”
• Having played under former Saints defensive backs coach and current Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, Harris comes to New Orleans with a sense of the culture and what expectations are in the Saints defensive room. “I feel like there wasn’t an adjustment for me,” Harris said. “At the end of the day, I’m just a ball player. When I first came in in the offseason and spoke to DA (Allen) and spoke to all the coaches, the culture here is set. The expectations are set. The expectations to how guys play and operate within the building, that’s all set here. So all I had to do was come in and fall in line.”
Mike Rose’s key points:
• The journey to the NFL isn’t always the same for each player. Rose and fellow Iowa State Cyclone Michael Jacobson know that all too well. Rose bounced around different teams before playing two seasons in the XFL/UFL.”It’s kind of what the league (XFL/UFL) is all about,” Rose said. “Just giving guys opportunities that maybe weren't in the best situation. It’s cool to be a testament to that. I think everyone in that league has dreams of being in camp, so like I said it’s just a blessing to be out here.”
Oli Udoh’s key points:
• The offensive line was the biggest question mark on the Saints roster going into camp. There are still uncertainties two weeks into camp. Oli Udoh is a veteran player who was brought in to possibly provide some consistency but two weeks into camp he still doesn’t know which position that will be. “I’m just kind of doing whatever the coaches are asking of me,” Udoh said. “Taking it one day at a time. Trying to find something, if it’s one thing out of the practice that I did better than I did the last day then it’s a good day. Just trying to stack days and head into the right direction when it comes to being able to perform and be ready for games.”
