ACTION
A look at the headlines from Wednesday’s practice:
Priority:
• Paulson Adebo and Alvin Kamara fully participated in practice today after being limited in yesterday's open practice.
• Carr continues to look sharp during the team periods of practice. He continues to work on his timing and cohesion with the wide receiver corps.
• Lucas Patrick left practice early due to cramps. Kyle Hergel filled in as the starting left guard, a position Patrick was filling in for after Nick Saldivveri’s calf injury early in training camp.
Analysis:
• Oli Udoh continues to take snaps with the starting offense at right tackle, splitting reps with Trevor Penning as the two battle for the starting spot.
• D’Marco Jackson intercepted Spencer Rattler on a tipped pass intended for Jordan Mims during the fourth team period.
What the coaches are saying
Post Practice Headlines
Dennis Allen's key points:
• Kendre Miller has not practiced since Day 1 of training camp due to a hamstring injury. Miller was set to be a key contributor in the new Klint Kubiak offense, but with him missing key worktime and reps, the coaches are unable to know what his future will be. “All I go off of is what I’ve been able to evaluate and quite frankly since we’ve drafted him there hasn’t been a whole lot of new information other than what I saw on the college tape, because he hasn't been available,” Allen said. “And for whatever the case may be, but it’s hard to make that evaluation. Hopefully, we can get him out here and have an opportunity to evaluate where he’s at. But it certainly makes it a lot more challenging, that’s for sure.”
• A player who has come in and all but planted his flag as the third option at wide receiver has been Cedric Wilson Jr. In a position room that is still trying to figure out who can be relied upon, Wilson has stood out as a sure thing. “I like the veteran presence that he adds,” Allen said “I don’t know if you paid attention to the crack toss block that he had in the game the other day, that was awesome. It's probably my favorite play of the game. Foster coming down on the end and him getting to the linebacker. I thought that was like real football, so that was cool to see.”
Klint Kubiak’s key points:
• Throughout training camp there has been a revolving door for who will rise up the depth chart as the fourth option at wide receiver. Mason Tipton flashed as a possible answer but has fallen off due to injury. With the inconsistent play of A.T. Perry and Kevin Ausitn Jr., Bub Means has stepped up in the past week as a probable answer. “Since the moment he came here you can definitely see his explosiveness fly off the tape,” Kubiak said. “I really like his intelligence. But it’s one game of work and we’re pleased with where he’s at and just got to keep growing him.”
• The depth of the new offense has been talked about throughout the offseason “I think that’s kind of the expectation since we came together as a staff,” Kubiak said. “The expectation is to be on the same page as our players. It’s not going to always be perfectly that way, but that is something that we communicate to our players and something we stress as coaches. Because of that, we have to spend a lot of time together and get it right in our film sessions before we go communicate to the players.
What the players are saying
Chris Olave’s key points:
• Throughout the offseason Nick has emphasized the importance of Saints receivers getting more yards after the catch (YAC). So far the Kubiak offense seems to be built for the receivers to have those opportunities. "I'm definitely excited," Olave said. "A lot of choice routes, a lot of 5-yard and you can get up the field and do your thing with it. But like I said it's going to be easier to be able to be involved in the game instead of waiting one quarter or two quarters to touch the ball. So I'm excited about this offense."
• It's clear that this season Olave will be the focal point of the receiving game. But with other options at different skill positions like Kamara and Juwan Johnson who is returning from injury, there will be an array of receiving options. "Yeah, Juwan is a really good player," Olave said. "I feel like he's underrated at times but he just brings a spark. He brings a receiving threat and he can block too."
Anfernee Orji’s key point:
• With Pete Werner and Davis out for the San Fransico game Anfrenee Orji saw his reps increase significantly. He wants to use this opportunity to grow as a player. "Feels good, it gives me a chance to feel comfortable in this league," Orji said. "Last year it was really just practice and some preseason games. Being able to go out there with the guys and the ones and get more experience with any group really is a blessing. Just trying to take advantage of the opportunities I get."
