A look at the headlines from Friday’s practice:
Priority:
• The team held their second open practice for the fans this week. Today’s practice was in the Superdome.
• A.T. Perry missed practice for personal reasons.
• Mason Tipton participated in practice for the second day this week but was seen on the sidelines without his jersey during the team periods.
Analysis:
• The offense continued to dominate in the team periods. Jake Haener shined moving the ball downfield effectively and throwing touchdown passes during all-team periods.
• Blake Grupe was 7-of-7 today with a long of 54. More on the kicker battle later.
What the coaches are saying
Post Practice Headlines
Dennis Allen's key points:
• As final cut-down day approaches Allen and the special teams coaching staff will have to make a decision on who will be the kicker going into the regular season. After Charlie Smyth’s 65-yard field goal on Tuesday and Grupe being perfect today, the decision won’t come easy. “It’s a total evaluation based on everything they’ve done,” Allen said. “PATs, field goals, kickoffs, the whole thing.”
• The 53-man roster is all but built out ahead of the final preseason game. There are still some things that Allen and the coaching staff are looking for from some players. “I think there are still a few things that we’re looking to see,” Allen said “I think there’s still some positions that we’re waiting to see who is going to jump up there and be the starter. And so we’re going to let that continue to play out. I think there is still a few spots left on the roster that we’re trying to let play out. There’s a few decisions to be made in terms of who are viable options on the practice squad.”
What the players are saying
Pete Werner’s key point:
• After missing a significant chunk of training camp practices Pete Werner has returned to full participation on the practice field. Up until his shoulder injury, he was the early favorite for camp MVP, but Werner is just excited to be back with his teammates and coaches. “It’s always fun getting out there with the guys,” Werner said. “Getting that chemistry back, being able to fly around is always a fun thing to do. Just being out there with the guys and being able to be coached again is what I missed. Using that competitive side, I’ve always loved to show that.”
Cedrick Wilson’s key point:
• Earlier this week Allen said his favorite play from Sunday’s game is when Wilson Jr. executed a crack toss block. Wilson Jr. has embraced his role as a blocker and wants to do whatever it takes to help the team. “I found pride in it the last two seasons. When I first started playing I wanted the ball, but learned that it was a big part of the game my last two seasons,” Wilson said. “Now coming over here I’m just showing the other guys that this is what it takes for the offense to succeed. That’s what I want to show because once we do block, our key players like Alvin and the other guys will definitely get into the zone. "
Khalen Saunder’s key point:
• The fast and explosive play of the defensive line has served as one of the bright spots of camp. Chase Young adds a sense of explosiveness to the defensive line, while Bryan Bresee and Carl Granderson look to continue to evolve along with other players. Saunders details how he and the team as a whole have taken a leap. “They say your tape is your resume and I feel like I put a lot on tape,” Saunders said. “I think that as a team we got better. Being isolated out there in Irvine and then coming back here I can see a lot of improvement throughout the whole team. I feel like the team got better and I feel like I’ve personally got better. And I feel like that’s the only goal of preseason football.”
James Robinson’s key point:
• Robinson is approaching Sunday’s game against the Titans with the intention of making a spot for himself on the 53-man roster. “It’s just as important as any other game,” Robinson said. “I’m still looking for a spot. I’ve been giving it my all all of camp, so it’s pretty important.”
