Here are today’s key points
ACTION
A look at the headlines from Tuesday’s practice:
Priority:
• Alvin Kamara was in attendance and participated in practice. Nick and Mike have more in here
• Chase Young and Kool-Aid McKinstry also participated. Young making his debut after neck surgery.
• Kendre Miller left practice with a hamstring injury. More on that later.
Analysis
• There was an energetic tone to kick off training camp from coaches Marcus Robinson and Michael Hodges.
• With Miller out early, Jordan Mims and James Robinson are seeing more reps.
• Foster Moreau clearly planted himself as the first tight end with Juwan Johnson recovering from foot surgery, but Michael Jacobson and Dallin Holker got reps with the first team.
• Derek Carr threw an interception to Demario Davis in the first play of team, the only interception of the period.
• Khristian Boyd got significant reps with the first and second units.
• Kool-Aid McKinstry didn’t have much of an opportunity to flash today but early observations show that he is patient and disciplined.
What Dennis Allen is saying
Post Practice Headlines
Dennis Allen’s key points:
• Allen is taking steps to eliminate mistakes during practice. “I don’t know that you’re going to notice a ton (of different things) from a structure standpoint, but the attention to detail and the demand I think has to be higher. What we’ve done has not been good enough, we’re all man enough to understand that and accept that and we need to be better,” Allen said.
• Allen was not shy when asked about Kendre Miller missing a significant amount of practice due to a hamstring injury on day one of training camp. “Look that’s a play (Miller) that’s going to have to figure out how to stay healthy because it’s hard to make the team when you’re in the training room all the time.”
What the players are saying
Alvin Kamara’s key points:
• As reported by Nick, Kamara was in attendance at training camp despite the ongoing contract negotiations. “I ain’t stupid, I ain’t going to give the money up, I’m trying to get some money. I was going to be here. It’s no one who has a jersey on. I wouldn’t even blame any coaches with what’s going on with contract issues. This happens all across the league. It’s happened here. It happens everywhere. People trying to get contracts trying to get paid and I’ll be a fool to spite my teammates because of a dispute I’m having with upstairs (management). I wouldn’t even call it a dispute we’re just having conversations about compensation."
• Kamara intends to stick around in New Orleans and wants to be duly compensated. “I think I’ve always told y’all I want to be a Saint for a long-time, for as long as my career goes. That’s all I’m looking for, really. Some people say the money don’t matter, the money does matter, but in the grand scheme of things I made a lot of money and I do with things off the field also. There’s kind of a feel of, okay, I want it to be fair, but at the same time I’m not chasing nothing. I'm not chasing nothing that's outlandish or that should be off-putting. I'm just doing my duty," Kamara said.
Derek Carr’s key points:
• Carr is looking to build off his first year with the Saints and this season the offense is working toward holding each other accountable.
“We’ve all made a commitment to each other to hold each other accountable, and it starts with Klint and Klint is holding us accountable. It doesn’t matter if I completed a pass to Rashid today. It’s going to be like, 'Put it on this shoulder not on this shoulder right here."
Cam Jordan’s key points:
• Jordan is putting forth an effort to show he still has gas left in the tank after recovering from an injury last season.
“Being hurt for the last seven games of last year sucks and at the same time it puts a lot of dip on your chip all I could think about is the moment I’m healthy what can I do. Whatever juice I can squeeze out let’s do that. I went into this off-season knowing I had to have a mental reset. That’s why you take some time off, travel, regather your thoughts and spend time with family so that when it comes to training camp they are good. It’s now time to focus on what I want and I want a Super Bowl,” Jordan said.
