Saints plan to sign QB Hunter Dekkers, S Terrell Burgess
The Saints intend to sign at least two more players from this past weekend’s group of tryouts, sources told NOF – undrafted rookie QB Hunter Dekkers and veteran safety Terrell Burgess.
They released RB Jordan Mims and S Millard Bradford.
Dekkers’ signing is pending a physical. The 6-2, 210-pounder is a fascinating prospect who almost certainly would have been drafted if not for a NCAA ban for gambling when he began his promising college career at Iowa State. He finished his career at Iowa Western Community College last year. And now there is officially an opening for a fourth QB on New Orleans’ roster in the wake of Derek Carr’s retirement.
Dekkers threw for 3,044 yards, 19 touchdowns and 14 interceptions in 12 starts for Iowa State in 2022. Then he threw for 3,806 yards, 32 TDs and 10 INTs at Iowa Western last season.
The Saints have a fascinating collection of young talent on the roster now at quarterback, where third-year pro Jake Haener is the “veteran” of the entire group, while rookie Tyler Shough and second-year pro Spencer Rattler figure to battle for the starting job this summer.
Burgess, meanwhile, is a four-year NFL veteran who was originally drafted in the third round by the Rams in 2020 out of Utah. The 5-11, 202-pounder played three years in Los Angeles, mostly as a backup and special teamer, before spending time briefly with the Giants, Commanders and Bills since then.
