What the coaches are saying

Post Practice Headlines

Dennis Allen's key points:

• Last night free agent safety Justin Simmons met with the Saints for dinner but left without signing a deal. Despite not signing Allen thought the meeting went well “I thought it was a good visit,” Allen said. “I can’t tell you exactly where that stands right now. I think this is one of those deals where we have a chance to sit down and visit with him in a number of different fronts. Myself, Mickey, members of the coaching staff and even some of the players. We get a chance to sit down with him. Him get a feel for us, we get a feel for him and then we evaluate how that went ... I’m sure there will be some communication from our people to his people and we’ll see.”

• Linebacker Pete Werner signed a three-year contract extension worth upward of $25 million. Werner had been having a great offseason and training camp before suffering a shoulder injury. He was challenged this offseason with the Saints bringing in Gay Jr. to compete at linebacker. Despite the challenge, the organization believed it was best to sign him long term. “I think he’s responded,” Allen said. “I think up until the injury I think he was performing at a really high level. I think Pete’s a guy that’s going to be a cornerstone piece for our defense as we move forward ... It’s good to get a guy that you feel good about, stands for all the things that you believe in and the way that we want to play football. I think to be able to lock one of those guys up for the future is good.”

What the players are saying

Derek Carr’s key points:

• The biggest question surrounding this team is offensive line play. During today’s practice, the inability to have consistent play prevented the offense from scoring during the final team period. Despite the struggles, Carr believes in this group. “I’ve been so impressed with how fast they picked it up and I’ve really been impressed with the execution of it,” Carr said. “We’ve had a few things, it wasn’t the 2-minute drive we wanted today ... You see guys really trying to do things the way they’re taught because if everyone does it the way they’re taught it usually ends up right.”

• Throughout the offseason everyone in the building has been raving about the new offense and the changes that come with it. Carr going into his 10th season in the NFL is still learning new things. “Certain details on everybody's plate, all 11 guys is really cool,” Carr said. “We can all look back to the history of this offense and see guys who ran the ball well and now it makes sense...there are some things that Klint does where as quarterback you’re like thank you, that’s really cool!”

Kyle Hergel’s key points:

• Saturday will not only be Hergel’s first time playing in the NFL but will be his first time attending an NFL game. Coming from Toronto, Canada, Hergel has not had a chance to attend an NFL game, growing up a fan of his native CFL. “I’ve never been to an NFL game before,” Hergel said. “This is my first one and I have pretty good seats for it.”

Rejzohn Wright’s key points:

• Wright has been thrust into first-team snaps with injuries to Marshon Lattimore and Paulson Adebo. Wright is excited for the opportunity to showcase his talent to the coaches and make the roster. “Just doing my one-eleventh (focus on an individual assignment),” Wright said. “It’s easy to get caught up in everything being out there with the ones. Guarding Chris, guarding Sheed (Rashid) guarding those types of guys and being a young guy like I am, just doing my one-eleventh“

Adam Prentice’s key points:

• The Kubiak system utilizes the full back more than most offenses in the NFL. 49ers fullback Kyle Juszczyk serves as the prototype for how the fullback should look in this system. Prentice is looking forward to the joint practices with the 49ers to pick his brain about this offense. “I’ll snag him at some point whether it’s before or after and talk now that we’ll be speaking the same language,” Prentice said. “It’ll be good to talk to him to get some pointers and some tips.”
