ACTION
A look at the headlines from Sunday’s practice:
Priority:
• The team returned to the practice field after winning their first preseason game against Arizona.
• Spencer Rattler missed practice after suffering a bruised thigh during Saturday’s preseason game.
• Rashid Shaheed returned to the practice field after missing practice last week due to a hamstring injury. Shaheed did not participate during the team period.
• Mason Tipton, Ugo Amadi, and Demario Davis were all in uniform but did not practice.
Analysis:
• Derek Carr and the first team offense worked to find a rhythm during practice. Carr threw touchdowns to Kevin Austin Jr and Cedrick Wilson Jr. during the red zone team period.
• A.T. Perry had a good practice. Building on his performance during the preseason game against Arizona. Perry was highly targeted by Haener during the two-minute team period.
• Jake Haener took all the second and third-team snaps due to Rattler’s injury. Haener scored on a scramble during the two-minute team period.
What the coaches are saying
Post Practice Headlines
Dennis Allen's key points:
• Even though the Saints won their preseason opener, the play of Trevor Penning continues to be questionable. It’s still too early to tell if Penning will lose the job as starting right tackle but he needs to make significant improvements before the season opener against Carolina. “I would say there are some good things that Trevor did. I think there are some things that he still has to improve on,” Allen said. “It’s his first game playing right tackle. I’m not overly concerned about that right now and yet he, I, we all understand that we have to improve.”
What the players are saying
Foster Moreau’s key points:
• The first-team offense went into Saturday's preseason game with a simplified game plan. Even though not a full game plan, the offense struggled to put together a drive. Moreau acknowledges that there is room for improvement. “Plenty to clean up,” Moreau said. “Tons of mental errors, pre-snap penalties, a lot of controllable things … Whether it’s a lack of being in your book, you’re letting the game get to you, or you’re tired and you get to the huddle and don’t hear the formation or the play call, you have to have the whole picture. Especially if we’re going to play in the first 15 plays and we have three me’s (mental errors) in the first 10.”
Carl Granderson’s key points:
• Prior to the second preseason game the Saints were scheduled to participate in joint practices with the San Francisco 49ers later this week, but those practices have since been canceled due to the 49ers facing health issues. Typically joint practices serve as a chase for both teams' first units to compete throughout the week leaving the majority of game reps to players looking to make the final roster. “I’m very disappointed. I love competing,” Granderson said. “That’s what camp is all about, to compete against other people. The good thing is we can get better work on ourselves and continue to compete against each other. And just go out there on Sunday against the 49ers and take it out against them.”
Monty Rice’s key points:
• The linebacker room has been a high point during training camp. Despite Demario Davis and Pete Werner being out due to injury, Rice is still turning to them for advice. “Being around Demario, Pete, D Jack (D’Marco Jackson) all those guys … They put a lot of effort into what they do and it’s only going to help me grow," Rice said.
