Will Clapp is retiring after eight NFL seasons, most of them spent with the Saints.
The New Orleans native came out of Brother Martin and LSU as a seventh-rounder in 2018 and ended up creating some real staying power with his versatility to play multiple positions on the offensive line.
His last go-round with the Saints didn't end the way anyone drew it up. Clapp came home on a one-year deal last offseason and went to injured reserve before the regular season started. He announced his retirement on Wednesday night.
Clapp has been a strong locker room presence throughout his career and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him stick around in some capacity. Jahri Evans left the Saints' coaching staff in January to become the assistant offensive line coach in Pittsburgh under Mike McCarthy. That job is open. And Clapp fits the profile. He knows the building. He's played multiple positions along the interior line.
The Saints have been willing to bring former players onto the staff — Evans being the obvious example. Clapp has the kind of football IQ and temperament that translates to coaching. If this is the end of his playing career, it might not be the end of his time with the organization.
