The Saints have already started working their way through the overcrowded competition on their interior defensive line by agreeing to trade veteran Khalen Saunders to the Jaguars, as first reported by the NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
Saunders was working primarily as the second-string nose tackle this offseason after the Saints traded for veteran Davon Godchaux in April. But the Saints had several worthy roster candidates at their interior defensive line positions – including backups Vernon Broughton, Jonah Williams, Jonathan Bullard, Khristian Boyd, John Ridgeway, Jayden Peevy and Omari Thomas. So it makes sense for this rebuilding team to get some value in return for one of them.
The trade compensation likely won’t be high. Neither will the financial savings since Saunders had already restructured his contract and was due to make just a $1.3 million salary this season. But it’s the latest signal that the Saints are looking ahead to the future a bit in their roster construction and opens the door for a newcomer to earn a roster spot.
Bink will be missed, though, for his oversized personality as well as what he brought to the field as both a defensive tackle and memorable part-time fullback. The 29-year-old finished with two sacks, one interception and exactly 100 tackles in his two years with the Saints.
