If you do this long enough, you’ll hear about all kinds of people who really wanted to come here.

Oh, the list of people who wanted to come here is lengthy and long. You can find someone close to pretty much any free agent, and you’ll hear that they wanted to come here. Just among quarterbacks, I’ve heard that Lamar Jackson wanted to come here, and that Mac Jones wanted to come here after he left the Patriots, and that Deshaun Watson wanted to come here.

And you know what? Maybe they actually did tell people that. But a lot of times, well … it doesn’t mean anything. If Lamar wanted to come here, he could have made it easier to schedule a visit, and as for Deshaun … well, thank god that didn’t work out. The point is, though, that people interpret comments differently and a lot of things get said during a recruitment.

All of this brings us to a report out of New York about how Aaron Glenn wants to go to the Jets. I checked with someone familiar with his thinking, and they didn’t just shoot down that report. They vehemently shut it down. Said it is 100% false. And I believe them. That doesn’t mean he is coming here and isn’t going to New York. It just means that Glenn doesn’t have a preferred destination … yet. Why would he? And why would he be telling people if he did? All that would do is cut down on his market.

What I can tell you is this: He really likes the Saints, is interested in the job, and we’ll see if things work out from there. You can’t even begin to start ranking spots until you go through the process, see if the team sees the roster the same way you do, and then, ultimately, money plays a part. Furthermore, the Jets don’t even have a general manager yet. All of those things will be weighed by the coach.

So, if you have Aaron Glenn at the top of your preferred list — and you should have him somewhere near the top — then I wouldn’t worry about that report. I strongly believe that the Lions defensive coordinator still very much likes this position and his options remain wide open.

The Saints are going to continue to interview candidates on Friday and Saturday (or at least that was the plan earlier this week), with Joe Brady and Kellen Moore next up on the list.

I find it somewhat fascinating that New Orleans hasn’t yet scheduled anything with Mike McCarthy. I’m guessing that is coming, but I assumed that they’d hurry up to get in the mix as soon as he became available. This time of year, you read into everything, and maybe none of this means anything, but it is interesting.

A while ago, I thought that McCarthy would be the candidate if he became available. Now, I believe he’s just a candidate, like everyone else, and we’ll see how it goes. I do believe the Saints have an interest. But we’ll see how it plays out.

It’s starting to look like Klint Kubiak might get the offensive coordinator position in Seattle. He’s going for a second interview, which often leads to a hiring.

It’s a shame we never really got to see him run this offense. The team was too injured to really ever get a feel for things beyond the first couple of weeks, and who knows how real that was early on.

But this is what happens when you fire a staff. You don’t want the front office hiring a coach who fits with the existing staff, and you can’t force the existing staff to stick around if you aren’t promising them a job.

Kubiak might go on and do great things in Seattle if he does leave. And his replacement could very well struggle. But this is the right way to do it. You want the next coach to have control over his staff, for better or worse.

Saints news as it breaks.

The whole point of following a team is knowing what's happening. Set it up once and stop missing things.
