Saints sign Nathan Peterman to compete at backup QB

The Saints have signed Nathan Peterman to serve as depth at quarterback, according to a source.

The team hopes that former fourth-round pick Jake Haener can ascend during his second season with the team and win the backup job. He'll compete with Peterman for that role.

Last year's backup, Jameis Winston, signed with Cleveland on a deal reportedly worth up to $8.7 million. Peterman is signing for the minimum.

Peterman, 29, has familiarity with new Saints quarterbacks coach Andrew Janocko, having spent the past two years together in Chicago. And before that Peterman spent three-plus years with the Raiders as a teammate of Derek Carr.

Peterman early in his career as a fifth-round draft pick with the Bills in 2017 out of Pittsburgh. He was released late in the 2018 season after he had made a total of four starts in two seasons with three touchdown passes and 12 interceptions.

He has spent the past five years working to resurrect his career as a third-string QB and occasional backup with the Raiders (from the end of that 2018 season through 2021) and with the Bears (from 2022-2023). He made one start during that stretch with Chicago at the end of the 2022 season, completing 11 of 19 passes for 114 yards with one TD and one interception in a 29-13 loss to the Vikings.
