The Saints announced that they have re-signed veteran safety Julian Blackmon to a one-year contract extension.

Blackmon, 27, showed a lot of promise after the Saints signed him last July to help fill the void left by Tyrann Mathieu’s retirement. And he entered Week 1 as the starter alongside Justin Reid before suffering a season-ending shoulder injury in that opener.

Now it feels like he projects more as a backup behind Reid and rookie breakout Jonas Sanker. But he’ll obviously still get the chance to emerge as a starting option, and the depth is a positive. Blackmon (6-0, 202) has played free safety, strong safety and nickel back throughout his career.

Blackmon began his career as a third-round draft pick of the Colts in 2020 and started 62 games over five seasons while also battling previous shoulder and Achilles injuries. He has 10 career interceptions, one returned for a touchdown, and two forced fumbles. He had 88 and 86 tackles in 2023 and 2024.
