Saints film room: How the Saints are now calling deep passes for Drew Brees that haven’t shown up in recent years

Everyone outside of New Orleans has an opinion about Drew Brees, and most of them seem to suggest that he no longer has much arm. The Saints are telling a different story.

Everyone outside of New Orleans has an opinion about Drew Brees, and most of them seem to suggest that he no longer has the arm or the ability to get things done more than a few yards down the field.

The Saints are telling a different story.

You’re free to speak your opinion on the quarterback, or to blame the coverage or personnel, but there will always be truth in the game plan. Friday’s game plan showed as much or more confidence in Brees as there has been this season. So, while the twitter takes were hot, New Orleans told you that it thinks its quarterback has more pop in his arm than he has in a while.

The overall performance wasn’t quite there yet. If Brees is searching for a Super Bowl performance, he needs to keep looking. However, there was a lot of good, and he improved upon last week. The way New Orleans called this game is what stands out the most.

One play tells this story better than most. It stood out live because it gained a bunch of yards and served as a vivid example of Brees throwing down the field, which does matter. He’ll need to make those throws during the playoffs for the Saints to win. But what probably didn’t stand out for most is that the Saints were running a play they never used before with Brees at quarterback.
