The Saints have operated with one goal in mind throughout the offseason.
Everything they’ve done, and everything they’ve tried to do, has been about creating versatility and flexibility on defense. The addition of Malcolm Jenkins opens up a world of options in the secondary. The attempt to bring in Jamie Collins was another swing at getting a versatile player who can play multiple positions. And that might be why we should have been paying more attention to Zack Baun throughout the draft process.
The Wisconsin linebacker isn’t scheme dependent or even position dependent. He can play outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme, just as easily as strongside or middle linebacker in a 4-3 defense. Then, on passing downs, he could easily serve as an edge rusher or is adept enough in coverage to drop into a zone and make a play.
